How the stub is calculated

  1. Gross pay — enter it directly, or enter hourly rate × hours for the period.
  2. Federal withholding — your estimated rate applied to (gross − pre-tax 401k). This is a rough estimate; actual withholding follows IRS tables and your W-4.
  3. FICA — Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45% = 7.65% of gross pay.
  4. Deductions — 401(k), health insurance, and anything else you list are subtracted to reach net pay.
  5. YTD — current-period figures × the pay-period number you enter (a simple straight-line estimate).

Pay stub FAQs

What is a pay stub?

A pay stub (paycheck stub) is the breakdown that accompanies your pay: gross earnings, tax withholdings, deductions, and net pay, usually with year-to-date totals.

Can I use this pay stub as proof of income?

Only if every number on it is true and matches your actual pay records. Lenders and landlords routinely verify income with employers and tax documents — a stub with invented numbers is fraud.

Is it legal to make my own pay stub?

Making a stub that accurately reflects real pay you received is fine. Making one with false information, or altering a real one, is illegal.

Why does my stub need YTD totals?

Year-to-date totals help you (and anyone reviewing the stub) sanity-check that the numbers are consistent across pay periods.

Estimates only — not tax or legal advice. Verify with your employer or a tax professional.
